Marriage

August 16, 2013

I don't claim to be a marriage expert but here is what I do know:

Don't speak poorly about your spouse in front of others...especially on facebook!  It's so hurtful and issues that you are dealing with in your marriage are just that...issues IN your marriage not outside of your marriage.  Build him up, don't tear him down.  Unless your spouse is an idiot he will reciprocate

Show your spouse that you care.  If he likes rhubarb crisp...make it for him.  If he takes his lunch to work every day pack it for him.  My husband recently got up at the same time I did to make sure that I had a piece of my birthday cake to take to work with me...because that's what I do for him!

Say thank you.  When he opens the door for you, smile and say thank you.  When he picks you up from work say thank you.  When he brings home your favorite coffee because he knows you're having a bad day...thank him.  Showing appreciation for the little things he does for you builds up your marriage.

    1. It makes me angry when women do that! Especially when they use the excuse...it's something all women do, vent about their husbands...umm no they don't. Maybe we are just an exception but none of my friends talk poorly about their husbands!

  2. Amen. I honestly can't imagine a life where we didn't do those things for each other as a married couple. As women doing those things for our husbands, it's not about being "old fashioned" or whatever. It's about going out of your way to show you care. In turn, we don't ever have to ask for the door to be opened or to be treated like we are #1. It just happens naturally as a matter of mutual love and respect.

As Steven Covey says in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, we should think of building others up as a way to make a deposit into someone's "emotional bank account." Each time you pack his lunch, or laugh at his jokes, or say I love you, you are making an emotional deposit into the account. If you aren't making deposits into someone's account, whether it be your spouse, or a co-worker or a family member, there will be no trust, no real bond...The bank account will be empty and there will be nothing there to give or take. And badmouthing a spouse on facebook?! Well, that person just drained the whole account, no matter what they might have built up in there in the first place. Yikes!
